Rethymno is the most traditional prefecture of the island of Crete, where all the famous Cretan customs are still a part of the every day life of the majority of the inhabitants. LOCATION:
Rethymno is one of the four dazzling prefectures that comprise the island of Crete. Being the second consecutive prefecture of the island, Rethymno borders with Hania (on the left) and Heraklion (on the right). The prefecture of Rethymno consists of the following four counties: Mylopotamos, Agios Vassilios, Amari and Rethymno.

The morphology of the prefecture of Rethymno is an amalgam of limitless sandy coasts and plains that alternate with verdurous mountains and drugged caves, composing an exquisite icon.
SEASONS:
We suggest that you should visit the prefecture of Rethymno during the summer months, which are considered to be the high tourist season. Rethymno is a center of tourist attraction, but at the same time it maintains its natural stillness.

The Lotzia, the Venetian houses, the churches of Agios Fragiskos, the fountain Riminti, the fortress Fortetsa, the Turkish school and the Turkish baths, the post Minoan cemetery, the monastery of Agia Irini and the several mosques at the town of Rethymno.

The musical events "Anogia" during August and the festival of Panagia on August the 15th, at Anogia.
The cultural events "Sfentonia" at Zoniana.
Childrens Book festival on August, the festival of the raisin, the festival of the apricot and the festival of the citron, at Perama.

LOCAL PRODUCTS:
At the prefecture of Rethymno you can find the renowned Rethymnian weavings. Moreover, you can buy cheese products and fruits from Amari, ceramics from Margarites as well as leather products, fretworks, herbs and serigraphs, gravures and hagiographies.
MAJOR TOWNS / CITIES / VILLAGES
Rethymno
The most attractive aspect of the appealing town of Rethymno is the infinite coast that embellishes the natural scenery. The town has a very good street planning, is very verdant and it is divided in the new and the old town, which has been declared scheduled and all the houses and the buildings are very traditional. If you decide to visit Rethymno, be sure that you will be totally bewitched by its seductive personality.

Adele
Adele is a very popular tourist resort, where you can find the largest hotel complexes of all the prefectures, situated lengthwise of the coast. On the southern part of the settlement, a plain with reeds outspreads all over the fertile land.

Anogia
Anogia is a very traditional mountainous hamlet, located between the prefectures of Rethymno and Heraklion. The inhabitants of the settlement of Anogia, maintain the traditional lifestyle of the past, a fact that is reflected on the way they dress, the food they eat, the dialect that they speak and the social life that they live.

Arcadi
Arcadi is the settlement where the homonymous monastery is located. Built on the edge of a fertile upland, the monastery of Arcadi bears a history of many years. On 1866, the monastery became the symbol of the freedom, when the Cretan fighters that were locket inside burned it down in order to avoid enslavement.

Panormos
Panormos is a coastal village of unique natural beauty and picturesqueness. The irresistible appearance of the traditional settlement in combination with the hospitable mentality of the inhabitants shall definitely charm you.

TRANSPORTATION:
BY FERRY:
From Piraeus, there are frequent timetables to Rethymno during summer, while in winter the itineraries are more rare. The distance from Piraeus to Rethymno is 10 hours. Rethymno is also connected to the Cyclades islands.

BY AIRPLANE:
From the Eleftherios Venizelos airport at Spata, there are flights to the town of Hania, all through the year. The duration of the flight is 50 minutes. From the airport of Hania, once a day there is bus service to Rethymno.

BY BUS:
From Thessalonica there are buses that shall transport you to Hania via ferry and afterwards to the town of Rethymno. Rethymno is also connected to the other prefectures of Crete.
